Misconceptions About the Use of Electric Cigarettes

Electric cigarettes can burn you. Not true. The “smoke” produced by the electric cigarette is heated but the device itself is entirely without temperature. The heated vapour is created by a vaporiser inside the barrel of the cigarette, which heats up a glycol and nicotine liquid until it becomes a vapour. The vapour is warm but the cigarette itself is not. The glowing end of the cigarette is simply an LED designed to give a realistic effect of a glowing coal.
The vapour used in an electric cigarette is free from harmful substances. This is not strictly true., While the vapour produced by electric cigarettes is way, way less toxic than cigarette smoke, it still isn’t ideal. There’s nicotine in it, for a start, which is never a good thing as nicotine is both incredibly addictive and poisonous. The glycol in the vapour is propylene glycol, which, while significantly less bad for you than ethylene glycol (ethylene glycol is used to make fake snow), is still not the sort of thing one would voluntarily ingest on a regular basis, were one not addicted to nicotine and trying to cut out tar and benzene and all the other chemicals contained in tobacco smoke.
Electric cigarettes produce smoke. Not true at all. The electric cigarette, as noted above, produces a vapour made of glycol, nicotine and some 40 other nontoxic inhalants. Because the cigarette doesn’t produce smoke, then, it doesn’t set off smoke alarms – and is perfectly legal to smoke anywhere that the regular smoking ban applies. Indeed, if one is being perfectly accurate then describing the use of electronic cigarettes as “smoking” is a total misnomer. There’s actually a product specific term coming into use, “vaping”, which refers to the fact that the electric cigarette is dispensing vapour rather than smoke.
Electric cigarettes will help you quit nicotine. This is logically impossible. Electronic cigarettes have nicotine in them so they can’t, in and of themselves, help you kick the habit. What they can do is help you stop smoking, which is a different matter entirely. Smoking delivers thousands of horrendous substances into your body every time you do it: vaping, to continue our use of the new term, doesn’t. So the electric cigarette is there not as a device to get you off nicotine, but as a device to stop you smoking any more tobacco.
Electric cigarettes are a good substitute for pregnant women. Absolutely not. Sorry ladies, the electronic cigarette contains nicotine and nicotine is not the best thing you can be giving your unborn child – unless you want it to be born with a predilection for the drug of course. In all cases, pregnant women should follow their GP’s advice rather than listening to the opinion of unknown people on message boards, article forums and websites.
The electric cigarette is marketed at non smokers as well as smokers. That’s pretty much nonsense, despite the stirrings in the press when the e cigarette first came out. The real problem people have is that electric cigarettes are marketed at all. Cigarette advertising is illegal in most places where the e cigarette is taking hold: the lobbyists don’t like the fact that the electric version has a free run at the field. In actuality, the electronic cigarette is simply being targeted at people who have realised that smoking cigarettes is stupid and want to stop.
